Creighton University President, the Rev. Daniel Hendrickson, SJ

Creighton University, as a proud, distinguished member of the BIG EAST Conference since 2013, is pleased to welcome the University of Connecticut back to the BIG EAST. UConn’s return to the BIG EAST followed meaningful conversations and consultations among the members of the BIG EAST Board of Trustees, which grew more focused in recent months.

Earlier this week, the BIG EAST Board convened, and I joined with fellow BIG EAST presidents in a unanimous vote in favor of the University of Connecticut returning to the BIG EAST Conference.

The addition of UConn to the BIG EAST Conference was officially announced by the league today at a press conference at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The year of entry will be determined at a later date.

The BIG EAST schools, which will number 11 with the addition of UConn, share a commitment to outstanding academics, Division I athletics, and partnerships that benefit and raise the profile of each member school. The addition of the University of Connecticut will add to the stature of our league – in terms of athletic tradition and distinction, increased national visibility, and academic reputation.

I am eager to welcome UConn’s athletic teams and fans to our campus and athletic venues in the near future. I believe this addition not only will greatly benefit the BIG EAST Conference, but will be exciting for our student-athletes and fans, and good for Creighton University and the Omaha community.
