Presidential message

At Creighton, we are committed to offering a comprehensive and competitive benefits package that provides options for our employees and their families. In that spirit, and as I shared in this week’s town hall, we have partnered with Express Scripts to manage the prescription drug portion of our health plan for the 2022 plan year. I realize that changes to any portion of our benefits can sometimes create anxiety and the likelihood of questions, so I intend to share both the reasoning for this change, as well as detail about what it means, practically, for employees. It, too, remains our custom and commitment, in advance of open enrollment in November, to share more beneficial information, tools, and resources about this change so you can make informed decisions for you and your family.    

Why we made this change  

Each year, we thoughtfully examine our plans, assess needs, administrative costs, employee costs, effectiveness, and many other factors to determine our plan offerings. As part of this year’s assessment, and with input from Creighton’s Benefits Committee, we decided to shift the prescription drug components of our medical plans from United Healthcare to Express Scripts. In previous years, United Healthcare managed both the medical and prescription drug components of our plan. It is important to note that we will maintain United Healthcare as our medical plan provider for 2022, with the continued choice of either the CCAP or PPO plans. 

Express Scripts works with pharmacies and organizations like Creighton to make the process of purchasing prescription medication easier and less costly. Indeed, they specialize in effective prescription drug care, using their size and scale to negotiate drug prices and pass those savings along to consumers. They also offer a variety of resources to educate consumers and make it easier to purchase prescriptions as our dedicated prescription care service provider. But perhaps most important, by moving to Express Scripts, we expect to decrease the financial burden of prescription drug costs for employees of the University, doing so with as little impact as possible.    

What this means for Creighton employees

I realize that health care is very personal, and I remain mindful of the fact that covered employees might feel some apprehension about what this new partnership might mean for their own, and their family’s, prescription needs. Please be assured that both Creighton and Express Scripts are committed to making this a smooth transition, and together we will provide both mailed materials and online resources so employees can better understand how this change affects them. That material will include a comprehensive welcome kit that contains additional clarity on offerings, capabilities, and cost, and is designed to assist you with the conversations you may need to have with your health care provider and pharmacy. Too, pharmacists at our own Creighton Campus Pharmacy in Omaha, and at affiliated pharmacies in Phoenix, will be available to provide expert guidance. It is our intention to provide every resource available to ensure a smooth transition. 

Rest assured that you will not need a separate prescription ID card. All covered employees will receive new United Healthcare ID cards early next year that contain Express Scripts policy information. Also, in most cases, you will not need to get a new prescription for existing refills, which should transfer automatically. 

As I do with all of our open enrollment materials, I invite you to read the prescription drug information closely so you can make informed decisions. 

Finally, as a reminder, our annual open enrollment period takes place Nov. 3-17. Please keep an eye out for additional communications and updates to our benefits guide, arriving in September.
